  1. Kia ora Gabriel and welcome to the Winter Learning Journey programme. I am so happy that you have joined us!

You've chosen to start with a really interesting activity. I can remember watching the news every day when I heard that whales had gotten stuck (beached) in Farewell Spit. I was so worried that they wouldn't survive and, sadly, it turned out that many didn't. They must have been so scared...

I agree with you that the best solution to the problem was to gather people together who could keep the whales hydrated and who could try and push them back out to sea. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do as the average whale weighs about 5000 kg. That is huge! It would take dozens of strong people to be working well together in order to move something that is that heavy.

What is the heaviest thing that you have ever lifted? I think that the heaviest thing that I have ever lifted is my son, Aronui. He weighs about 30 kg and I think that he is really heavy. He's nowhere near the 5000 kg mark!

I hope that you will continue to blog with us this holiday, Gabriel. I would love to read your posts, comment on them and award you points!

    Until next time,

    Rachel :)

  3. Hi Gabriel,

I'm reading your blog from my home in Canada. It's wonderful that you've decided to join the blogging program during your school break!

I hope you'll try some of the other activities this week.

What a huge surprise it must have been for people to discover so many whales stuck on the beach! It was wonderful that so many volunteers tried so hard to keep the whales alive until they could be floated back out into the ocean on the tides. Can you imagine being one of those volunteers, staying up day and night to keep the whales hydrated and breathing? Wow! What a big effort!

    I hope you'll enjoy being a blogger!

    Leslie
